You know something? Almost every time I lose perspective on how much I have to be grateful for, I find myself having such a negative attitude. I’ve been labeled as a very positive person, and I’m glad that others see me that way. However, I know my inner most thoughts, and I know that there are days that I’m just so focused on what’s going wrong, and how tired I feel, or how disappointed I am. The world may not see it, but I know my heart.

I am always so delighted when I catch myself being negative, and I think something to counteract it… it immediately energizes me and gives me such life. Here’s an example:

“This traffic is ridiculous, I’m tired, my feet hurt, and I just want to go home”

Then, I think, “Wait, can I change that perspective at all?”

Well, yes… “Thank God that I had somewhere to go today, that I have a car to get me there, that the sunshine is still out, and that I have some food at home to eat… Thank God that I worked and that my feet hurt because I made some income, and thank God that I have a home to go to”

I literally just wrote that whole paragraph out, read the grateful part and started tearing up. Even just writing out that hypothetical scenario was enough to evoke grateful emotion.

Now, what does this have to do with organizing? Well, there’s a couple connections that can be made that I notice:

  1. Many people who are overwhelmed with clutter are dealing with the consequences of acquiring too much stuff through shopping. Many clients are looking to fill the emptiness in their home, or their hearts with stuff. And, with a practice of gratitude of what they already have, they may be able to avoid buying more.
  2. Facing an overwhelming project can feel so discouraging, and if you take some time to practice gratitude, you may find yourself energized, and happy and more balanced to tackle said project.

I hope that this post inspires you to consider some gratefulness. If you’re finding yourself having a hard time forgiving someone, I challenge you to list the things about them that you’re grateful for. If you’re having a negative attitude, I challenge you to try a new perspective on the situation.

I firmly believe that every positive attitude and action in this world COUNTS. It all adds up, and YOU can contribute to the goodness in the world, even through a small moment of gratitude.

As always, I’m cheering you on with GRACE!
