Obligation- the condition of being morally or legally bound to do something.
- You are not obligated to keep something because someone gave it to you.
- You are not obligated to keep something because someone paid money for it.
- You are not obligated to keep something because YOU paid money for it.
- You are allowed to change, and you are allowed to let things go as you grow!
- When you give or receive a gift, please don’t tie an expectation to it.
Give yourself permission to let go of something that no longer serves you, that you no longer love, or that no longer has special meaning to you.
As a professional organizer, I have seen the tension in clients trying to decide to get rid of something, but feeling stuck because of obligation. I like to see it this way: When someone thought of you to gift you something, the gift was in that moment, and also in the moment you received the gift. If it’s no longer serving you, if it’s hiding away in a dusty closet, if you have forgotten about it, or if you don’t have space for it, it’s no longer a gift.
You are free to decide what to do with it, regardless of someone else’s expectation (even my opinion as your organizer doesn’t matter) My job is to ask you questions to help you make the decision that resonates with YOU!
